Bhairavakanda Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi

The Jayasree Bodhi tree in the Bahiravakanda Sri Maha Bodhi Maha Vihara in Kandy is sprouted from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi a sacred fig tree in the Mahamewna Gardens.

In 1962, it was planted by the late 4th prime minister Mr. William Gopallava, with the contribution of the Kandy Youth Buddhist Association under the guidance of the then Attaragama Thero.

Although it was planted for the worship of the common people, after a few years it fell into the forest. There was no one to take care of it.

This about sixty years old Jayasree Bodhi tree now has grown to about fifty feet in height. Its gently rises just like a blooming lotus flower just as Sri Maha Bodhiya, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka is the oldest living tree in documented history of the world.
